A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found unconscious at a property in Essex.
Police said the woman, in her 30s, was admitted to a London hospital on Sunday in a life-threatening condition and died on Thursday.
Officers believed she may have been assaulted and they remained at the scene in Elsenham Crescent, Basildon.
Det Ch Insp Louise Metcalfe said the force was not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.
The arrested suspect is 32 years old.
"We know that this will shock the Basildon Community," said Det Ch Insp Metcalfe.
"We will be carrying out inquiries to help us establish the events that took place before the woman was taken to hospital and I'd ask anyone who holds information that could help our investigation to contact us."
