About 100 residents have been evacuated after a fire broke out at flats in Edinburgh in the early hours of the morning.

The fire is still going, but most of the residents seem to have been moved down to Leith Community Centre at the Kirkgate, where temporary accommodation provision is being handled.

Edinburgh city council said health and social care officers were supporting residents and a rest centre had been set up at Leith Community Centre.

Council leader Cammy Day said: "We'll continue to support all agencies and the local community and explore temporary accommodation should it be required.

"I'm very grateful to the emergency services for their ongoing swift response."

I've been talking to residents who were evacuated from the flats.

Sophia says: “It was about 4am and Keera came through to my room. The alarm originally stopped, but then it got louder and we knew we had to go.

“There has been a lot of drills recently, so we didn’t think it was real.

“We came outside and we could smell it, there was so much smoke. I think it affected about 20 or 30 flats.

“We could see and hear the glass on the balcony breaking and tumbling down.

“We’ve had two fires in the space of six months, we’ve only lived here since October. Back in November there was a car that got set alight.”

Around 70 firefighters are tackling the blaze in Breadalbane Street in Leith.

A firefighter has sustained minor injuries while tackling the blaze.

He was treated by the ambulance service.

Around 70 firefighters have been tackling the fire in Breadalbane Street, Bonnington, with Police Scotland and also in attendance.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it sent 12 fire engines and specialist vehicles to the scene after the alarm was raised at 04:10.

It said there were "no reported casualties" involving members of the public.

A spokesperson added: "One firefighter has sustained minor injuries and has received treatment from Scottish Ambulance Service at the scene."

Our reporter James Delaney is on Breadalbane Street in Leith talking to residents.

Laurie Donaldson says he managed to flee his flat, but his two cats did not make it out.

The 27-year-old civil servant says he was not sure of the extent of the damage, but he fears up to 20 properties were damaged, with some "completely destroyed".

He says: “I think it was an electrical fire, but I don’t know for sure.

“A few of them are completely destroyed.

“My two cats are still in my flat, I was just asking the firemen if they had seen them. The room that they are in, the door is open so hopefully they are ok.”

Harry Williams, who works as an engineer, says five flats appeared heavily damaged by fire with 15 to 20 others potentially damaged by smoke.

He adds: “As I stand here right now the fire is spreading to another flat. It’s really not looking great.

“People are pretty shaken and tired and upset. To be honest I am feeling a little bit numb.

“The police are looking after us. They have got us into a building across the road."

The SFRS says crews remain in attendance at the blaze.

Graham Simpson explains that the "access for the fire brigade is not the best".

He adds: "They're not able to drive a fire engine right up to the front of the flats."

Simpson says they have been able to get in via the back, but "it's not a good design".

"Luckily everybody is out, everybody is safe and that's the most important thing."

Speaking to Graham Simpson, �鶹Լ�� Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme said the fire was still ongoing and was "very dramatic".

He suggested that some people "will not be able to get back in".

Simpson says his fellow residents "seem pretty stoic".

"Some people have been very upset, a lot of people are currently taking shelter in an office block just opposite the flats.

"I believe a community centre has been made available.

"People are pretty fed up."

Conservative MSP for Central Scotland Graham Simpson, who has a property in the block, was among the residents evacuated.

He says: “It started on the fifth floor and it’s spread up to the sixth floor and it seems it has gone into the stair well.

“My flat looks Ok. We got out. The fire is still raging now, three hours on.”

Simpson tells Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme the fire is still going.

"The main thing is everybody got out safe," he adds.

Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme has been hearing from resident Harry Williams.

He says around 150 people were on the street or sheltering at a nearby centre.

Williams says: “The fire alarm went off at about 04:00 and the fire brigade turned up.

“It was initially a small fire contained to one small flat, however that has spread to other flats.
