Caveman animation The Croods has topped the UK and Ireland box office chart for a third successive weekend.

The Dreamworks film pulled in £2.3m from Friday to Sunday, bringing its total haul to £17.7m.

GI Joe: Retaliation remained at number two despite taking less than half the amount of its opening week.

Science fiction horror Dark Skies was third in the chart after taking £1m in its opening week, while Danny Boyle's Trance dropped to four.

The Croods, which features the voices of Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone, follows the story of a prehistoric family who are forced to abandon their cave.

Fantasy film Jack The Giant Slayer fell one place to five with Oz The Great and Powerful at six. The Wizard of Oz prequel has now taken £13.6m since its release 5 weeks ago.

Spring Breakers, the new film from Oscar-nominated actor James Franco and High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens, entered the chart at nine taking £345,000.

The comedy opened at 181 cinemas, averaging £1,907 per location. For comparison, Trance averaged £1,715 per location across the 421 screens it was shown in.

The new entry from Disney, The Odd Life of Timothy Green starring Alias actress Jennifer Garner, just made it into the top 10 taking £296,465.
