Part of the M61 has been closed after a "serious collision" overnight, National Highways have said.

The crash resulted in the closure of the motorway between Junction 8 at Chorley, Lancashire, and Junction 6 at Horwich, Greater Manchester, in both directions.

The northbound carriageway has since been reopened but the southbound carriageway remains shut as Lancashire Police continue to work at the scene.

Diversions are in place. Details of the collision have not yet been released.
