A man alleged to have been carrying what appeared to be a firearm in Maidstone town centre has been charged by police.

Kent Police said it received reports at about 19:00 BST on Monday of a man in Knightrider Street in possession of a handgun.

After the man was taken into custody, officers found a suspected airgun in a bush in the area.

He has been remanded to appear at Medway Magistrate's Court on Wednesday charged with possession of an imitation firearm in a public place.
