A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after police officers found a knife during a stop and search.

Cumbria Police said officers made the arrest in Kendal town centre on Saturday after the three inch (7.6cm) blade was discovered.

The youth was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article before he was later released under investigation.

The knife seized was a locking type which the force said was "always prohibited".

A police spokesperson said knife crime "devastates lives" and added the "message was clear - do not carry a knife".
