Two cars have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack in Londonderry, police have said.

The PSNI said two cars were set on fire at about 23:30 GMT on Monday in the Grainan Drive area of the city.

Two other cars were also damaged.

Police and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended and the fire was extinguished.

No one was injured, but both the vehicles set alight sustained significant damage, police said.

“A number of people are now in a position of having to sort out their transport problems and the disruption associated with that, and any other associated costs,” PSNI Insp Craig said.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Meanwhile police have also appealed for information after a separate incident in Banbridge, County Down, in which two cars were also set alight.

It happened in the Rockmore area of the town shortly before 02:00 on Tuesday.

The cars, a silver Toyota Yaris and red Toyota Corolla, were parked in a driveway of a property, police said, when they set on fire.

PSNI Insp Kerr said both had been “completely burnt out”.

“Scorch damage was also caused to the garage area of the property," they said.

"Thankfully, a man and teenage boy who were inside the house at the time were not injured,” the officer said.
