A man has been taken to hospital with "serious and potentially life-changing injuries" after being shot in Garvagh, County Londonderry.

He and another man were both taken to hospital following an aggravated burglary at a house in the Mettican Road area of the village at about 21:00 BST on Tuesday.

Police say they were in the house when they were attacked by a number of other men wearing balaclavas.

One of the men sustained gunshot wounds to his arms and legs.

Speaking to ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ News NI, Democratic Unionist Party councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan said there was "utter shock" in the community following the attack.

"I know the family myself and they would be very well respected and well-known in the local area.

"I've received a number of text and calls from people who are really concerned by this and still can't believe something like this has happened.

"My thoughts go out to the two people injured following this attack and I urge anyone with any information about the incident to bring it forward to the police."
