A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash, which closed part of the A5 in Leicestershire for several hours.

Leicestershire Police said officers were called to a stretch of road between the B4114 and High Cross, near Wigston Parva, at about 11:15 BST on Saturday.

The force said a blue Volkswagen Golf GTI had left the carriageway and hit a tree.

The driver - a man in his 20s - was the only occupant in the car, which had been travelling from Hinckley towards Lutterworth, police added.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward, as they look to establish how the car left the road.

National Highways said the southbound carriageway was closed while emergency services dealt with the crash.

It confirmed the carriageway had reopened at 18:51.
