A man who died in a crash on the M62 after driving on the wrong side of the motorway has been named as Leslie Lewis.

Mr Lewis, 78, from Doncaster, suffered fatal injuries when his Vauxhall Corsa collided with another vehicle at about 02:00 GMT on Saturday 23 March.

Mr Lewis had left Hartshead Moor Services, near Huddersfield, on the wrong side of the carriageway shortly before the collision, West Yorkshire Police said.

The male driver of the other vehicle remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers have appealed for information and help from anyone who was in contact with Mr Lewis the day before the incident.

He is believed to have driven from Doncaster to Hull on Friday evening, before then travelling onto Manchester.

He was then returning to West Yorkshire along the M62 when he stopped at Hartshead Moor Services.

Sgt Steve Suggitt said: “A great deal of work remains ongoing to investigate the circumstances of this collision which tragically resulted in Leslie’s death and in another driver receiving serious injuries.

“I am seeking assistance from any member of the public who may know Leslie and had contact with him on Friday 22 March, whether in person or by telephone, as it is important we build up a full picture of the circumstances of the incident."
