Police have arrested a man on suspicion of assault and criminal damage after an incident which saw a woman taken to hospital and nearby houses being evacuated.

Warwickshire Police responded to a report of an assault on Tudor Road in Nuneaton in the early hours of Friday morning, where a woman had suffered a head injury.

A 36-year-old man from Nuneaton, who was later arrested, claimed to have damaged the gas pipes inside the property.

Nearby houses were evacuated and attending gas engineers discovered that no damage had been caused to the pipes, meaning residents could move back into their homes by about 06:00 BST, police said.

Police negotiators were called as a man was found to have locked the front door of the property and refused entry.

The police force said investigations were ongoing.
