An experienced motocross rider died after falling from his motorcycle, an inquest opening has heard.

Duncan Powell, 35, from Knighton, Powys, was taking part in an event near Llandrindod Wells on Sunday, 28 July.

Paramedics at the event attended quickly after the fall at Penybont motocross track and he was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, Pontypridd Coroner’s Court was told.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as traumatic brain injury and a motocross accident.

Rachel Knight, the assistant coroner for south Wales central, sent her condolences to the family at "this sad time" and adjourned the inquest to a later date.

Mr Powell would have celebrated his 36th birthday on Friday and his family called him the "best brother, son, husband, daddy, and friend".

Event organisers Mid Wales Motocross posted on Facebook: "Duncan was a regular rider of ours who always had a big smile on his face and knew how to put one on other faces too.”

Wales Air Ambulance said its air ambulance attended shortly before 11:00 BST and and left an hour later.

Powys council said it was aware of the incident and was making initial inquiries as part of its investigation.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it was not called to attend the incident.
