Flood defence works in Laxey to enter next phase

The next phase of works to strengthen flood defences in Laxey River will begin on Monday morning.
Focusing on reinforcing the existing walls on Glen Road, the works are due to take eight weeks.
The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) said fish had been removed from the section of the river by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (Defa) ahead of the works.
The improved defences have been developed in response to the 2019 flood, which saw more than 60 houses damaged.
The DOI said fish from that section of the river were set to be "relocated elsewhere in the river where they won't be further disturbed" by a team from Defa's inland waters team.
The latest works were also being done "at a time when it won't impact on spawning or migratory fish", the department added.
Glen Road itself will remain open throughout the project, with contractor Paul Carey and Sons using the access gate upstream from Victoria Terrace to access the river.
Garff Commissioners' car park, opposite Laxey Football Club, will being used as the site compound during the works, leading to the relocation of the recycling bins to DOI depot, which will be open for the public to use.
