Tom Kerridge's Fresh Start

Ep. 1/6 -

Last year, in Lose Weight For Good, Tom inspired a group of struggling dieters to lose weight whilst still loving their food. Now, Fresh Start sees Tom turn his attention to families with the belief that bringing them together through home-cooked recipes will make them healthier, fitter and happier.

In the first episode Tom meets the eight families for the first time. He introduces them to the first of six steps they will be following to simply get the families cooking together and more often.

To spur them on, they are each given a starter pack of fresh ingredients with easy recipes to make at home. They all want to make a fresh start with food, because time pressure, fussiness or lack of confidence in cooking have contributed to an over-reliance on convenience food.

Tom takes them through healthier simple options for classics like sausage and mash, which sees the Clarke family from Marlow sit down together for their first home-cooked meal in 15 years. The Boswell family from Tiddington, rely on pre-prepared meals and takeaways, but want to set a better example to their toddler, Elsie, 18 months.

Tom shows them a simple red pepper pasta sauce which is not only quicker, but a cheaper and healthier alternative to shop-bought ones. Meanwhile, Tom visits the Ruff-Brooks from Amersham to give Play Specialist, Nicola, a gentle introduction to fresh produce. They make a turkey schnitzel and coleslaw. It’s a bid to kick-start a change for Nicola, her husband Andrew, and the fussy eating habits of her daughters Ashleigh-Jade, 10, and Sophia, eight.

Tom, his wife Beth and their son Acey, two, invite Tom’s mum Jackie and her friend over for a Sunday lunch of Greek-style roast lamb. Talk soon turns to how Tom fell in love with cooking, and the first meals he ever cooked for the two most important women in his life.

Tom cooks up more tasty dishes to inspire his gang: a tomato salad packed with Mediterranean flavours and a chicken and peanut stir-fry which the whole family will adore.

At the end of Step One, the families send in their food diaries to see how many meals they've all cooked from scratch, compared with before the experiment began.
