Q&A with Marvin and Rochelle Humes

Were you excited to be filming more Celebrity Specials of The Hit List?

Marvin: "Yeah, we loved having the celebrities come onto the show. We get messages from our friends who would love to come on. For example, I’m good friends with Roman Kemp and his dad, Martin Kemp who are a great combo with one being a DJ and the other being in one of the biggest pop bands of the 80s."

Rochelle: "Kate and Anneka Rice were also amazing. They should do more television together! They were a great duo."

M: "Also, with Dr Ranj and Dev, with Dev being a radio DJ, I think that’s a great help. For example, Scott Mills who has over 20 years of radio experience won the Special last year. So, I think the radio DJ’s have a little bit of an advantage. I will also say that with Fleur being a musician, she has a great bank of music knowledge and Hannah and Nathan are music fans and big fans of the show. It’s going to be great to watch."

How do you think this group of celebrities fare? Did they play a good game?

M: "Some did, some didn’t! All I can say is that one pair of the groups did very badly. To the point of, do you even listen to music?! [laughs]"

R: "I was trying to play charades and act out the name of the song but that didn’t help!"

M: "Yeah, viewers may be screaming at their TV’s with this one!"

How do you think you would fare on the show, if the tables were turned?

M: "I think we’d do okay!"

R: "Yeah, I’d have to sing a bit in my head to remember a track."

M: "Growing up, my dad was a DJ so I have a large catalogue in my head gained over the years. I’m not saying we’d win but I think we’d do alright!"

The Hit List: Strictly Special

Curtis and AJ Pritchard on the Hit List set

Curtis and AJ Pritchard

As professional dancers, you listen to a lot of music. Do you think this helped with your time on the show?

AJ: "Well, on Strictly Come Dancing, they’ll go ‘AJ, we want you to dance to this song’ and I’ll always respond ‘Great, what is it? Who is it by?’."

Curtis: "Surely that’s really helpful!"

AJ: "Well no, because I never remember the artist’s name! I love listening to music and choreographing dances to it but I’m awful at remembering names and the artists."

What are your favourite genres of music and why?

C: "I love easy listening so easy 50s, 60s and 10s. The reason being is that you can listen to it anytime of the day, anywhere, doing anything. I can work out to that music; go to the beach with that music…"

AJ: "I’m the complete opposite. I listen to anything! My playlist is so random - it’ll go from Eminem, to Ed Sheeran to Dermot Kennedy."

What was your strategy before coming on the show?

AJ: "Win."

C: "Well, yes but we just planned to hit the buzzer as much as possible because you don’t get minus points for that!"

Are there are skills from your time in Strictly that you can use for your gameplay here?

AJ: "I think my Strictly experience helped because I do listen to a lot of music and I usually know the name of the artist but I don’t always know the name of the track. So it helps 50 percent of occasions!"

Dr Ranj and Dev Griffin on the set of the Hit List
Dr Ranj and Dev Griffin

Dr Ranj and Dev

As a Radio 1 DJ, you have a broad knowledge of music. Did that help you in the game?

Dev: "There are so many holes in my music knowledge and stuff I don’t know about. Stuff from the 70, 80s, 90s and the early 00s; I don’t know that much about. Any music from the last year and half however, I’m so good at!"

Dr Ranj: "I’m so glad he’s my partner!"

Are there any skills from your medical background that helped?

DR: "I like to think I’ve got quite a good memory so I find it quite easy to remember things. So if it’s quite an obscure song, I find my auditory memory is pretty good. Although, I might just not get it right. Confident but inaccurate!"

How do you think your Strictly experience helped?

D: "I think from being on Strictly, we’re both used to dealing with nerves. We also didn’t have to do anything physical on the show, we just had to stand there and look good."

DR: "Yeah, I think under pressure, we cope okay."

D: "And, we weren’t being judged at the end of it. No one held up any scorecards!"

DR: "Also, we didn’t have to dance with each other because that’d be awful! [laughs]"

Kate Silverton and Anneka Rice on the set of The Hit List

How would you rate your general music knowledge?

Kate: "There are some songs I know really well but recently when I listen to a song, the name or artist are never announced so it's more difficult to have that instant recall."

Anneka: "My general music knowledge is good due to working as a DJ at Radio 2 for 15 years. My only problem is being put on the spot. I suffer from buzzer brain freeze syndrome."

What are your favourite genres of music and why?

K: "I have a very eclectic taste - ranging from Eminem to Matt Munroe and all in between. My children were both born to a playlist that included Born Free as well as Eye of the Tiger and Lose Yourself so that should give you some idea! I also love opera and the uplift of listening to classical music too."

A: "My favourite genres are art rock, glam rock; summed up by David Bowie. I like a song with a good narrative and lyrics. I was brought up on a diet of musical theatre so I love a song from the musicals."

How do you think your Strictly experience helped you in this challenge?

K: "Being on Strictly means I wasn’t as nervous as I will never fear anything quite like Strictly so much again so in that way, it has helped!"

A: "It was lovely to see Dev and AJ again. It made it less competitive and more fun!"

The Hit List: Celebrity Special

Martin and Roman Kemp on the set
Martin and Roman Kemp

Martin and Roman Kemp

Roman, as a radio DJ and Martin, as a musician, do you think this pitted you above your competitors?

Martin: "I’d really hope so! We have a wide range of taste in music."

Roman: "My dad and I are known to be awful at most game shows. Every one we’ve gone to, we’ve left a trail of destruction on how bad we do! I’ve got the knowledge of the new stuff and my dad’s got the old stuff."

Was there a gameplay plan between both of you before you came?

M: "No, we just tried to get as many answers right as possible!"

R: "My game plan was just to make sure my dad knows the rules because he doesn’t listen to that and there are moments where he’s lost us answers because he’s not done it in the proper way. But sometimes if he listens too long, he forgets to press the button, so keeping him on the ball was my main task!"

Do you both have any favourite genres of music that you can guess most songs from?

M: "I’m big on the 70s and 80s and Roman can deal with the rest!"

R: "Obviously pop music over the last decade I’m all over. I know pretty much everything. But in terms of my favourites, I would say hip hop, I know that world really well and I’ve always listened to it. Sometimes a bit of indie stuff is thrown in there. It’s quite hard as a radio DJ; you have to have an eclectic taste in music."

Tell us about the first-ever CD you bought and why?

M: "Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight."

R: "The first CD I ever owned was the Marshall Mathers LP which was bought for me from my mum, which is horrendous considering the amount of swearing in there!"

Fleur and Keisha East on the set
Fleur and Keisha East

Fleur and Keshia East

Were you both nervous before playing?

Keshia: "We were a little nervous as we had no idea what songs they would throw at us! I especially thought I wouldn’t know anything!"

Did you have a strategy of your gameplay before coming?

Fleur: "We didn’t think any strategy could work - you either know the songs or you don’t! But we agreed not to rush and both agree before answering."

Tell us about the first-ever CD you bought and why?

F: "I was totally obsessed with music from a very young age. My firsts were from artists like Pink, Destiny’s Child and Spice Girls!"

K: "I didn’t listen to music until I was between 13-14!"

Nathan and Hannah Cockcroft on the set
Nathan and Hannah Cockcroft

Hannah and Nathan Cockcroft

What skills do you think you can bring from your careers as athletes to The Hit List?

Hannah: "I think as athletes, our competitiveness is definitely a skill we put to use."

Nathan: "Teamwork too!"

H: "We also brought our determination to win!"

Did you have a game plan before playing?

N: "The game plan was to hit the button and look at Hannah to answer it! I’m not very good at music knowledge. I can make up my own lyrics but I’m not so good at titles and names."

H: "The main plan was to at least get one and make it to the next round!"

How was it filming after the first lockdown?

H: "Being on set post lockdown was strange! All the filming I’ve done before has been in front of a live audience, getting hair and makeup done and getting to meet the other contestants before the show. It’s something new but it was nice to be out and doing something different."
