Kirsty Wark celebrates the life and work of Dame Muriel Spark, author of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie and one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic cultural figures.

Kirsty Wark takes us on a journey through the life and work of Scottish writer Dame Muriel Spark. Born in Edinburgh, Muriel’s extraordinary life took her to colonial Africa, wartime London, literary New York and vibrant 1960's Rome.

Her most famous novel The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie immortalised the city of her childhood, but with an added darkness and acerbic wit that became her trademark style. Kirsty retraces Muriel’s footsteps from the cobbled streets of Edinburgh to the sublime beauty of Victoria Falls. Contributions from writers AL Kennedy, Janice Galloway, Ali Smith, William Boyd and Val McDermid tell of Muriel Spark’s unique literary style and a life full of reinvention.

Kirsty meets with the journalist Alan Taylor, who has recently published his memoir of Muriel Spark, and she travels to Italy for the first television interview with Penelope Jardine, pictured, Muriel’s close friend of 40 years.

This programme first aired on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland earlier this year. The producer/director is Morag Tinto and the executive producer is Tanya Hudson. Mark Bell and David Harron for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scotland commissioned the documentary for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. Produced by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Studios.

Rebel Women: The Great Art Fightback

Out of the tumult and fervour of the end of the 60s emerged a generation of artists who set out to start a revolution. As women around the world joined forces to fight for liberation, the formative art movement of the last four decades was about to explode into being. On both sides of the Atlantic women were tearing up art history, reinventing the arena of art with experimental new mediums and provocative political statements.

In LA, Judy Chicago founded the first feminist art course and told her students to only study work by women. In London, Mary Kelly was causing tabloid outrage by displaying dirty nappies at the ICA, while Margaret Harrison’s depiction of Hugh Heffner as a bunny girl resulted in her exhibition being shut down by police, claiming it was offensive to men.

Alongside interviews with Turner prize-winner Lubaina Himid, Suzanne Lacy, Carolee Schneemann, and Rose English, The Great Art Fightback tells the story of these revolutionary artists and celebrates the grit, humour and determination that wrote women back into art history, for good!

(1x60) was commissioned by Cassian Harrison, Channel Editor Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Four , the commissioning editor for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Arts is Emma Cahusac. The Executive Producer for What Larks! is Claire Whalley and the director is Clare Tavernor. The is part of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s series, which will mark the anniversary of women’s suffrage.

Mark Kermode's Secrets Of Cinema

With his trademark blend of wit, passion and strong opinion, Mark explores the film-making techniques and storytelling secrets of an eclectic selection of movies - from Hollywood classics to the best of global cinema, and from big budget blockbusters to art house gems.

Mark will focus on a single well-loved genre in each episode. He’ll examine a wide range of films and uncover the key elements they all share, while showing how film-makers have put on their own spin to keep these genres thriving - and to keep audiences coming back for more.

Whether he’s demonstrating how to stage the perfect 'meet cute' in a rom-com or to pull off the perfect bank robbery, to create a shocking jump scare in a horror movie or a convincing science fiction future, Mark will help you look at your favourite films with fresh eyes and open your mind to new cinematic treasures.

Angela Carter: Of Wolves And Women

Angela Carter’s macabre imagination produced some of the most dazzlingly original fiction of the last century. The Magic Toyshop, Nights At The Circus and The Bloody Chamber influenced a generation of writers, including Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Jeanette Winterson.

Yet Carter’s remarkable life was often as extraordinary as one of her subversive fairytales. This film is a dark and delightful foray into Angela Carter’s fabulous world, from her claustrophobic childhood to her troubled life as a young housewife, and the trip to Japan which transformed the way she saw the world - radicalising her and shaping her as a feminist.

In a publishing landscape dominated by men Carter never won the Booker Prize, nor received the hefty advances of her male contemporaries - yet her preoccupation with sexuality and female empowerment chime powerfully today.

Inspired by the imagery of her fiction, this documentary is a timely visual treat, using rare archive, animation from award-winning Peepshow Collective, and the talents of some of our most distinctive actors. Hattie Morahan brings to life Angela Carter’s frank diaries and letters, and Maureen Lipman, Kelly MacDonald and Laura Fraser read from her fiction.

Angela Carter: Of Wolves And Women is a 1x60 for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two produced by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Studios. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Executive Producer is Richard Bright, and it was commissioned by Mark Bell.

Oceans Apart (w/t)

Marking the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s departure on the first of his three epic voyages to the Pacific, this series looks afresh at the exploration and colonisation that followed through the explosive encounter between European and indigenous Oceanic art.

Art historian Dr James Fox sees Cook’s voyages as the start of a powerful clash of cultures, a story of both brutal exploitation and surprising cultural exchange, which he finds etched into the artistic record in extraordinary paintings, engravings, sculpture and carvings.

The commissioner and executive producer for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is Emma Cahusac. Russell Barnes is the Executive Producer for ClearStory. A 3x60 series for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Four.
