We believe that women and girls' access to security and justice should not be treated as a 'woman's issue’ but also target men and their role within the family and the community.
A compelling 15-minute drama, set in the fictional Bamba Community, followed characters as they faced dilemmas and challenges in their day-to-day lives. The storylines aimed to help women and their nearest and dearest, such as a husband or brother, to know where to go and who to talk to for help and guidance.
Each episode of Bamba Community was followed by a 45-minute pre-recorded discussion programme, Leh Wi Know, which explored a topic already touched upon in the drama, such as; land ownership, domestic violence and teenage pregnancies. Listeners put their questions to national leaders, officials and civil society organisations among others. Both the drama and discussion gave people practical information to help them get access to the justice system.
Olabisi Garrick, presenter of Leh Wi Know, said: “We believe that women and girls' access to security and justice should not be treated as a 'woman's issue’ but should also target men and their role within the family and the community.â€
The radio show was part of a broader Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action initiative aimed at improving women and girls’ knowledge of their legal rights in Sierra Leone. In addition, partner radio stations received mentoring to produce their own programming on security and justice and to help strengthen female journalists’ contributions to local programming.
The programme was broadcast across the country through Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action’s network of partner stations and was funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) as part of its Access to Security and Justice Programme (ASJP).
