Everyone at Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action is shocked and saddened by the terrible news that our beloved colleague, Kate Mitchell, was killed in Nairobi on 19 November.
Kate was a senior project manager with Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action and had been with us for 14 years, working in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zambia and London.
Kate was positive, fun, driven and extremely talented, and her work made a huge difference to many communities, and to Media Action’s mission of using media and communication to address poverty and inequality around the world.
Caroline Nursey, Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action Chief Executive Officer, said:
"We are all shocked and horrified by this terrible news.
"Kate was a much-loved member of staff, and was well known across our whole organisation, especially by our teams in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zambia, and London.
"We send our deepest condolences to her family and her many friends around the world."
Peter Mitchell, Kate’s brother, said on behalf of his family:
‘Kate was a deeply beloved daughter, sister and friend, and we are only beginning to realise the magnitude of her loss.
‘Kate loved her work and was tireless in her efforts to make the world a better place. She leaves behind many, many beloved friends and colleagues around the world. We want to extend our sympathies to everyone who knew, worked with and loved her, and our sincere thanks for the many messages of comfort we have received.
‘We are working with FCDO and with Kate’s colleagues at Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action to understand what happened. The circumstances surrounding her death are still being investigated, and we would ask you to ignore speculation in parts of the press and on social media.
‘We ask everyone to respect our family's privacy as we grieve Kate's loss’.
Â鶹ԼÅÄ Media Action is continuing to work with the UK government to establish exactly what happened and will provide whatever assistance we can to the Kenyan authorities investigating. Her death is not believed to be linked to her work.
Our deepest condolences go to her family and her many friends around the world. An online book of condolences will be available for her current and former colleagues.
