Review: Supporting journalists in challenging environments

This review explores the challenge, the impact and the learning – from our training programme called Khabar Academy in the six Gulf States.

In 2016 we designed a training programme for journalists and online producers in the six Gulf States. The project aimed to increase editorial and technical skills, support media professionals to publish accurate and impartial news and information, and facilitate public debate.

Published: June 2019

Our e-learning platform Khabar Academy was created in Arabic and over 100 trainees enrolled and completed the training by September 2018. Half of the trainees were women and the training put particular emphasis on amplifying women’s voices in the content created. It also helped journalists bring people together with narratives that reflected common issues, beliefs and values shared by their diverse audiences.

This report describes valuable lessons from Khabar Academy on using distance learning to strengthen and support local media working in challenging environments. The project was designed and implemented in line with international editorial standards and our findings assess several factors that contributed to its success, including cultural, social, as well as technical considerations.

We’ve also shared learnings, recommendations and areas for improvement to assist other media organisations working on similar projects to support journalists working in challenging circumstances.
