Media and communication have the power to save lives and improve health. Our work helps people take action on their health: making informed decisions, inspiring discussion, increasing understanding, recognising and reflecting on what prevents change, and building new skills and confidence.
Our projects and programmes are grounded in research; we work closely with partner organisations, key audience groups and government ministries, and across the communication platforms most likely to reach and engage our audiences. We use role models, personal stories, drama, humour, health experts and real-life experiences for programming that spans digital and social media, television, radio and community discussions.
Our projects focus on prevention, testing and treatment for diseases like malaria and polio, as well as dispelling misinformation and reducing stigma. We cover issues of family health and wellbeing, including nutrition, maternal and child health and parenting; water, sanitation and hygiene; and sexual and reproductive health and rights. The principles of inclusion and supporting the health and rights of the most vulnerable are at the heart of our work.
In public health emergencies like COVID-19 and Ebola, our programmes go beyond looking at prevention, symptoms, testing and treatment, to countering the ‘infodemic’ of false information and examining the pandemic’s associated impacts, including psycho-social wellbeing and a rise in gender-based violence.
