Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Media Action is the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s international charity.

With our partners, we work to provide impartial, impactful, trustworthy media to people in need so that they can make informed choices to transform their lives.

With our partners, we reach more than 100 million people in need around the world, in more than 30 countries and 50 languages!

In a world of disinformation, distrust and division, we share the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s values, skills and experience to bring people together, and foster greater understanding and trust.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Media Action is an independent charity. We rely on our donors and supporters to carry out our work around the world.

Most of our money is institutional funding – from places like the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office; UN agencies and other government aid agencies. We also receive funding from foundations, philanthropic organisations and corporate partners, and a smaller amount from public fundraising, including events and appeals. We do receive some support and gift-in-kind arrangements from various parts of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

We voluntarily subscribe to the UK Fundraising Regulator.

In 2023-24, for every £1 donated, 88p went to our projects and programmes, and 12p to administrative costs and fundraising. We have projects and programmes in over 30 countries, with country offices in 14.

Our funding is a mix of restricted (project) funding and unrestricted (flexible) funding. While we are grateful to all our donors, our unrestricted funding is extremely valuable – it allows us to plan ahead, to direct funding to where it is most needed and to respond more quickly in emergencies. It also helps us to maintain sufficient support staff to ensure our projects and programmes are as efficient, effective and transparent as they can be, and to make sure donations are being spent wisely and honestly.

All charities in the UK which are registered with the Charity Commission have a trust deed – a legal document which governs what they can and can’t do. When Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Media Action – then the World Service Trust – was registered as a charity in 1999, it was to support local broadcasters and populations only outside the UK. We have been doing this for 25 years – working with local media and delivering content that helps address poverty, inequality, division and – increasingly today - disinformation.

We are committed to ensuring that all our funds are spent wisely, transparently and effectively. We work hard to ensure that our core costs are kept as low as possible, while ensuring we have enough support staff in place to meet donor and statutory requirements, to ensure our projects and programmes are as efficient, effective and transparent as they can be, to raise money to help us continue to operate, and to make sure donations are being spent wisely and responsibly.

We do this through our grant and contract agreements with our institutional and foundation donors, through philanthropic and corporate donations, and through some public fundraising. We also receive some financial support and gifts-in-kind from parts of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.
