Towards Light is their debut mini-album. It was produced by big name Americana producer Kramer – Sonic Youth, Low, Galaxie 500 – from the desk of a studio in Wales, but sadly for the band, the famous knob-twiddler has given them more of a Galaxie 500 sound than Sonic Youth.Μύ The whole album just feels underpowered with the guitar far too back in the mix.

That’s said, there is much to praise on this confident debut. Album opener You Set Me Reeling reminiscent of Murmur-era REM and it soon gets poppy with the immense Second Guess that gallops along in a nu-rave style, based on Dan Sims’ splendid fretwork.

MDMA is their piece de resistance, as they go all Bloc Party with some spirited edgy guitar and Ollie’s bizarre stream of conscious vocals finally overcoming the turgid production to really let rip.

Had this been an album spawned of a mediocre music scene, then it would be a Premier League effort, but the reality is that Manc debuts get judged by far tougher standards, thanks to the likes of Joy Division, Stone Roses or the Smiths.Μύ

That said, this is still just off – Championship play-offs certainly – and it hints at early promotion to Manchester’s top flight, as long as for the full debut, they get a producer who really understands their sound, rather than just a big name.
