Ready for the Warehouse

Last year, it was an abandoned brewery; this year, it’s an old air-raid shelter… when the Warehouse Project decide on a venue, they like to try somewhere a bit different.

Thankfully, though, it’s only the size that’s changed (this time, it’s a snug 1800 capacity), as the three-month fiesta of shape-throwing and foot-tapping sounds returns for a second year with a line-up that might actually top the previous one.

Amongst those due to take a turn on the stage or a stint at the decks are Armand Van Helden, Amp Fiddler, John Digweed, DJ Yoda, Jeff Mills, François K, Fabio & Grooverider, 2 Many DJ’s, Erick Morillo, Goldie, The Whip, Simian Mobile Disco, Gilles Peterson, Mos Def, Aim, Broke’n’English, Chromeo, The Aliens, Four Tet, Foals, Aphex Twin and Mad Professor.

It’s quite a bill, especially when you consider the fact that the organisers didn’t know whether they could face another three months of fun and frolics, after the last one left them exhausted.

Yet as the Warehouse Project's Sam Kandel observes, "after listening to the feedback from all those who attended Beneath The Streets [at the same venue in May], we realised we did really have to do The Warehouse Project 2007.

"It's not as big as last year, but the atmosphere and the sound over those three days was absolutely amazing. We were looking at a few different options for this year, but we feel that this is definitely the right decision. It feels quite surreal that this is all about to kick off again - we're not really sure if we're ready for it!"

As for the line-up, Sam says it’s "80 percent there now, but some big announcements are still coming. We're really pleased with how it's all looking."

With so many big nights and early bird tickets for 2 Many DJ’s, Aphex Twin and even New Year selling like hot cakes, we would be too. There’s no doubt that the city is theirs again.

The Warehouse Project runs beneath Piccadilly Station on Store Street from Saturday 29 September to Tuesday 1 January. Times and prices vary. Check the website for details.
