As they release new single, Silent Hotels, singer Martin told us about electric shocks and learning to live with each other. How's life in the band?"We're all happy and excited at the moment. We've just finished our first UK tour, which took us all over the country. We played in Hull, Lancaster, Edinburgh, Leicester... everywhere really.  The Answering Machine "It was a bit of a shock to the system. We're not used to life on the road; living on junk food and power naps. But despite the tired eyes and chesty coughs, we've now developed, we've enjoyed ourselves and met lots of amazing people, and realised we can actually live with each other for a whole month!" You played a Brighton phone shop along the way. What was it like?"Yeah, we played in a mobile shop on Brighton High Street on a Saturday afternoon. It was part of the Great Escape festival, and bands were playing small guerilla-style gigs all over the city. Our set went down really well. "The shop was packed full of people, and we even had an audience out on the street. There were all ages at the gig, which was fun, because we don't often get to play to such a varied crowd. It turns out that grandparents like our music too. I don't quite know how we landed the show - I hope it wasn't a cheeky reference to the band name."
The new single, Silent Hotels, what's it about?"The general theme of the song is a snapshot of the urban environment in which we live, and the anonymity and the temptation that it carries with it. I guess it's the confessions of someone who's naivety has led them into a world of isolation. You end up drinking too much and thinking too hard, but in your head, it's the best way to deal with your problems." How excited were you by the gig at the King's Arms in Salford?"Our single launch party was a lot of fun. The King's Arms was a strange choice for the launch, but the venue has a great vibe to it, and the building itself is beautiful.Μύ  The Answering Machine "We filled it with our family and friends. Me and Pat had our parents there in the front row too. The gig itself was quite shambolic. We were getting electric shocks off the microphones, which meant we couldn't touch the mic heads with our lips. A couple of times during our set, Pat was thrown half way across the stage because he got a little too close. "We seem to have more fun when things go wrong. I think we're very good at just laughing off technical problems and it makes the live show slightly more real and believable." How important has the Internet been to your success so far?"The Internet has played an integral part in our journey so far. It's mainly been due to the power of MySpace, allowing bands like us the chance to showcase our songs on a global scale.  The Answering Machine "We were offered a gig before we'd even uploaded music onto our page, and by the time the songs were added, we'd been offered a gig supporting Good Shoes at Night and Day. "The Internet has revolutionised the way in which we consume music. Bands no longer have to rely on live shows alone, and instead are able to use the Internet as a promotional tool to further develop themselves." And what's the message on your answering machine?"Aaah, we don't have answering machine messages, I'm afraid.Μύ That's much too obvious."
