The Verve revived

The epic indie rockers that were The Verve have announced that they have reformed for a new album and a new tour, according to a statement on lead singer Richard Ashcroft’s website.

It simply says that “Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury were back recording together in a London studio last week. After a summer break, they will return to the studio to complete their next album.â€

The band have also announced six live shows in November, playing Glasgow Academy, Blackpool Empress Ballroom and London Roundhouse.

Simon Tong, who was with the band from 1996 until they split up, will not be part of the reformed band, as he is now working with Damon Albarn on his The Good, The Bad and The Queen project.

The Verve formed in 1989 at Upholland High School and went on to have massive critical and commercial success, releasing three albums; A Storm In Heaven in 1993, A Northern Soul in 1995 and Urban Hymns in 1997, which spawned the band’s only number one, The Drugs Don’t Work.

The band split up in April 1999, a year after guitarist Nick McCabe suddenly left the group, saying he could not cope with touring any more, and bass player Simon Jones collapsed on stage during their tour of America.
