Memories of the Haçienda

With all the talk of the Haçienda’s 25th anniversary, it’s bound to stir up the memories and get you thinking about the times you spent there; the highs, the lows and the all-night parties…

With that in mind, the Museum of Science and Industry would like to hear those tales of late-night fun and frolics.

At an event to mark the anniversary at Dry Bar, staff from the museum will be on hand to record the first-hand accounts from the regular clubbers that went to the Hacienda.

The idea is that the stories will accompany the Museum’s archive collection of Haçienda material, the combination of which the museum’s senior archivist, Jan Hargreaves, hopes will provide a rich vision of the club in its heyday.

"The Haçienda is an important part of Manchester’s identity, and attracted international attention on the dance scene through its championing of Chicago House and as a focal point for ‘Madchester’.

"It should be a fun event, with a chance to catch up with old friends, listen to some favourite tunes and share memories."
Jan Hargreaves, MoSi Senior Archivist

"We have a number of items from the club, such as flyers, posters and copies of Ben Kelly’s building design plans, but we wanted to capture some of the essence about why it became so successful.

"The best way to do that is to speak to the people who were part of that scene and add their voices to our collections.

"More than that, though, it should be a fun event, with a chance to catch up with old friends, listen to some favourite tunes and share memories of one of Manchester’s most well-loved institutions."

The event is free of charge but places are limited, so participants should call MoSI to reserve a ticket. Anyone that does come along also has the option of free transport to a film night, Ghosts of the Haçienda, at One Central Street, which will celebrate the anniversary by showing films of club action shot by Ikon.

To attend MoSI’s Hacienda memories event at Dry Bar, please contact Sallyann Browning on 0161 606 0112. The event runs from 6-8.30pm on Monday 21 May at Dry Bar on Oldham Street
