News and Interviews

Class Green

The last time Liz Green went to Glastonbury, she worked the car park through the night to get herself in. Three years on, she’s going back, but this time she’ll be opening the Pyramid Stage.

It’s something that’s feeling as unreal for the artist herself as it is for everyone she tells. Not that she isn’t good enough. After all, to get there, she’s beaten the thousands of entries to Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent competition and impressed the organisers so much with her sound, they upgraded her from to the main stage.

In her typically modest way, she never thought she’d win the competition. As she puts it, she didn’t expect to win it "for a second. I actually forgot we’d entered it until someone rang to say we were on the shortlist.

"I was just amazed to be on there, so when they rang and said I was in the finals, I was like ‘what?!’ But I was and I won. Then it all started to get silly. They phoned up and said ‘would you like to stay on the Other Stage because we were thinking we might like to put you on the Pyramid?

"I was like ‘right, ok, yes. I’ll go for the Pyramid Stage, thanks."

Much as she grabbed the opportunity, the actual idea of playing the main stage at Glastonbury is one that Liz can’t quite get her head round.

"It’s so surreal and it’s going to be so bizarre. It’ll be nervous laughter all the way, especially when we’re walking on and seeing all my friends… or rather not seeing them, because it’s a big stage and a long way up!

"I don’t know how my songs will work on such a large scale."

"I actually forgot we’d entered it until someone rang to say we were on the shortlist."
Liz on why winning the Glastonbury competition was a surprise

It’s something she’ll have to find out when she gets there, because until then, she’s got plenty to do, not least take her place at Salford’s Sounds From The Other City, an event that she’s looking forward to mostly because of the venue she’s playing.

"We’re playing in the Sacred Trinity Church and it’s amazing. I’ve been to a few gigs there before and it’s brilliant, so I was so excited when Dunc [Le Chunk of Red Deer Club, who take over the venue for the day] asked us to play there.

"I think it will have a really good atmosphere and for the songs that I do, I think it will suit the style very well."

Between SFTOC and Glastonbury, Liz is also playing numerous shows at such diverse places as Cornerhouse, Fuel and The Carlton Club. Not that she minds being run off her feet, though she has had to become a bit more organised than before.

"I feel really busy. I’m not running on empty, but I really have to keep thinking about what I’m doing next. I don’t think I’ve ever used a diary before in my life, but now I definitely do."

Who knows? With so much interest in her sound, it might not be long until she has someone else to check that diary for her. Until then though, she’s just going to keep on doing what she does best – playing uniquely beautiful music.

Liz Green plays Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on Saturday 23 June. She is at Sacred Trinity Church as part of Sounds From The Other City on Sunday 6 May and What? The Folk at Cornerhouse on Sunday 13 May.
