A major blaze caused serious disruption in Manchester city centre (Mon 30 April). The fire in a five storey commercial building on Dale St spread to a second building that contains apartments. We asked for your eye witness reports and photos:

Walking across town this morning there were big lumps of burnt wood several hundred metres from the fire by the bus stops in Piccadilly Gardens, so it must have been a hot blaze early this morning. The smell of burning is still on my clothes and in my hair

I got off a bus in Piccadilly Gardens this morning only to see them completely swamped in smoke. It was immediately obvious that something serious was taking place. Shortly after two fire engines arrived and, looking to the sky, you could see smoke billowing upwards

Fire was already raging at 6:05 as I came into town.Ìý Smoke covered Piccadilly gardens and down Portland Street.Ìý Police were jsut arriving.ÌýÌý Now I'm sat in my office on the other side of the Gardens to the Fire and there is a police helicopter circling.ÌýÌý Strong smell of smoke in the office, and from where I am on teh 25th floor, then you can see a carpet of smoke covering the majority of the City Centre.Ìý

Took these photos at 6.30am this morning when the fire was most developed, i think. While I was there, there was a couple of very loud bangs. As I was leaving, the Fire Service were taking water from the canal.

I live just up the road fro the buiding. I looked out of my lounge window at about 7:30 this morning to see a blanket of smoke billowing out. I walked down there towards the station and witnessed varous firefighters trying to put the fire out from the tall ladders. The entire area was closed off to traffic.

anon, northern quarter
Our water is off - Im guessing the firefighters are using it!Just glad nobody's hurt. And the traffic isnt as bad as everyone is saying, it took me the usual time to drive in through the Northern Quarter!
