Busk into the records

Having made a heap of cash to help the fight against cancer with last year’s Manchester v Cancer gig, The Smiths legend Andy Rourke is doing it all over again at the Arena and is launching this year’s show with a record-breaking attempt.

Andy’s leading a Versus Cancer attempt to set the record for the world’s largest group busk on Saturday 13 January, and he needs your help.

"Whether it be an acoustic guitarist, solo singer or man with a triangle, anybody can get involved."

"Whether it be an acoustic guitarist, solo singer or man with a triangle, anybody can get involved," Rourke says.

"A record of this kind has never been attempted before so it will be great if we can do it, especially as it’s for charity. We hope to raise £1 million to fight cancer with our 2007 concerts, and we hope this will set the ball rolling nicely."

It’s simple to get involved. Just email your name, contact details and how you plan to the organisers to register and receive your free Versus Cancer T-shirt. Busking will take place between 2pm and 4pm, with a grand finale in Exchange Square.
Simply send your details to busk at email: busking@greatnorthernproductions.co.uk

And as if the chance to be a world record holder wasn’t enough reward, everyone who takes part is getting an invite to a local venue afterwards to celebrate with Andy and the team.

Performers at last year's Versus Cancer gig

The Versus Cancer gig at the Arena takes place on Friday 30 March. The line-up is yet to be announced, but if last year’s show is anything to go by, littered as it was with Mancunian stars old and new, it should be a belter.

Money raised from last year’s concert went to the Christie Hospital and an award-winning public awareness campaign around Manchester that pushed the importance of checking for signs of the disease.

Tickets go on sale for the Versus Cancer concert the day before Andy’s big busk, on Friday 12 January.
