Taking flight

Flight 602 has been a new beginning for Aim, with a new label, a new approach and a fuller live sound. As he plays at the Warehouse Project, we asked him about being part of the opening weekend, the response to the album and the sensational Niko.

How have the live shows over the summer being going?

"We're getting there; we tested out some new tracks and they went down really well, so it's good that the record is out now and some of the audience will be familiar with the new stuff."

You're playing the opening weekend of the Warehouse Project. Are you nervous?

"Not at all, I can't wait. We've been rehearsing hard and the band is sounding really heavy. If we had this gig a couple of years ago, playing at 1am at a warehouse party, I would have been sweating a bit as the set had a lot of slower, chilled tunes but now it's full of bangers, so we're well up for it."

Are you a fan of warehouse parties?

"I used to enjoy the odd one years ago; Blackburn, Stalybridge, that kind of thing. When they work, they're amazing and the buzz around the Warehouse Project is massive so I'm sure it's going to be a memorable night."

How do you feel about the way the album's been received?

"Generally, it's been good. A lot of people love it which I'm happy about, a few don't get it or get hung up on the fact that there are no MC's but Cold Water Music was released seven years ago and the last thing I wanted to do was remake that.

"Personally, I think it's easily the best of my three LPs. I think the tracks are better produced, the samples knit together better and all the tracks flow into each other. It really works as whole piece if you listen to it from start to finish."

Flight 602 is named after a plane journey that the writer Charles Bukowski took. What do you think he would make of the album?

"I think the tracks are better produced, the samples knit together better and all the tracks flow into each other."
Andy Turner on why he reckons Flight 602 is his best work yet

"He's more of a Randy Newman man, so I'm not sure. I think he'd like the lyrics to Aberdeen and It's Later Than you Think though."

How crucial is Niko to the Aim sound these days?

"Very. I love working and writing with her. She can adapt her voice to so many different styles and the melodies she comes up with are beautiful. I'm going to start producing her next album after the gigs, so look out for that next year some time."

Aim plays the Warehouse Project on Saturday 7 October. Flight 602 is out now on ATIC Records.
