Soap is dead, long live Sankeys

When news hit that Sankeys Soap was closing, there was a genuine pulse of fear went through Mancunian clubland. Thankfully though, Soap’s demise has given way to a revamped Sankeys. We spoke to Sankeys stalwart Greg Vickers about the new club.

Sankeys Soap is dead, long live Sankeys! What's changed?

Sankeys opening weekend

  • Sankeys opening weekend is on Fri 22 (with Plump DJs and Greg Vickers) and Sat 23 Sept (with Jon Carter and Linus Loves)
  • Entry: Fri is £9, Sat is £12

"Well, everything except the sound system! We built the new space around that. On all levels, we have recreated the club into a comfortable, open and party friendly space. To try and explain it all would take far to long - just be excited and watch out for the lights in the main room. A cross between Tron and the Matrix is all I am saying!"

Are you happy with the changes?

"I have many great memories of that club; it is, after all, where it all started for me. However, the space required a real facelift..."
Greg on why Sankeys needed more than a simple refurbishment

"Very much so. Myself and David have had a lot of input on the redesign, which has been great fun. We have also been working with some very creative designers who, to be honest, have hit the nail on the head - so yes, very happy with it all."

Were you sad to see the end of Soap?

"No, it was time for a change. I have many great memories of that club; it is, after all, where it all started for me. However, the space required a real facelift and rethink and this is what we have done - to be honest, I really am not sure what beast we have created here!"

Will you be changing your own set style to go with the new look?

"No, I’ll be playing the music that I love, which has always been my approach to what I do. I have, however, spent a lot of time really thinking about what I am going to play."

There's a rumour there's going to be a lot more live music…

"We are certainly going to be taking on more live acts within the programming to add an extra dimension, starting with Booka Shade Live for the Tribal Sessions birthday on October 6."

Sankeys is re-launching at the same time as the Warehouse Project hits Manchester. Are you worried about the competition?

"Not at all - we are going to be providing something which you will not be able to find anywhere else in Manchester… or the North for that matter!"
