Karima the crop!

Anyone who’s heard Karima Francis will agree she’s one of Manchester’s brightest new talents. We got her to take time out of her hectic schedule of gigs to come in, tell us a bit more about herself and sing us one of her fabulous songs.

Where does your music come from?

"When I sing, the feeling that I get makes me feel complete and I know I don’t want to be a drummer anymore."
Karima explains why she's taken to singing

"I started as a drummer when I was 13. My mum got me a kit and I drummed in bands from them. I picked up the guitar about 11 months ago when I came to Manchester. I started gigging all the time after meeting Simon (Robb, Karima’s guitarist), and that’s it."

So it wasn’t a plan…

"No, it wasn’t. I didn’t know I could sing. I’d never sung before and someone told me that I could. It’s weird. When I sing, the feeling that I get makes me feel complete and I know I don’t want to be a drummer anymore."

What are your songs about?

"Real life stuff. I write about love obviously, because that comes into everything, and past, and things like that."

You’re playing at In The City in October. How important is it to play there?

"It’s really important, but do you know what? I never really knew about it before!"

When you sing, you sing from the heart, from the bottom of everything you know…

"Yeah, I go dizzy and forget things at the end. It’s like 'where am I?' I don’t know, it’s weird."
