"I started as a drummer when I was 13. My mum got me a kit and I drummed in bands from them. I picked up the guitar about 11 months ago when I came to Manchester. I started gigging all the time after meeting Simon (Robb, Karima’s guitarist), and that’s it." So it wasn’t a plan… "No, it wasn’t. I didn’t know I could sing. I’d never sung before and someone told me that I could. It’s weird. When I sing, the feeling that I get makes me feel complete and I know I don’t want to be a drummer anymore." What are your songs about?

"Real life stuff. I write about love obviously, because that comes into everything, and past, and things like that." You’re playing at In The City in October. How important is it to play there? "It’s really important, but do you know what? I never really knew about it before!" When you sing, you sing from the heart, from the bottom of everything you know… "Yeah, I go dizzy and forget things at the end. It’s like 'where am I?' I don’t know, it’s weird."
