Future beats

Beats For Beginnersā€™ marriage of analogue ideas and digital technology is right up Futuresonicā€™s street, so itā€™s little wonder theyā€™re playing the festival. Mainstay Mike TV told us more about the show, covering Kiss and the new tunes.

How are things in camp Beats?

Futuresonic Lounge

  • Futuresonic Lounge is on Fri 21 and Sat 22 Jul. Entry is free
  • Friday sees performances from Cursor Miner, Beats For Beginners, Shmoo and Lal
  • Saturday has sets from Stazi, The Lovers, Working For A Nuclear Free City and Dipoleman
  • Both nights will be available to listen to on the Futuresonic site

"Very productive at the moment thanks, Iā€™m constantly recording new stuff for the next record, which will be called Laser Beams For Eyes. Iā€™m just getting my head round some new music software on me laptop and have a new workspace in an old converted factory in Salford.

"The new record is on the horizon but itā€™s been side tracked by our monthly disco night, Sounds Of The Suburbs, which has taken off in Chorlton and now at Bighands too. Also MySpace, takeaway food and the World Cup with its sticker book have all got in the way of work... but Iā€™m back on it now!"

You're playing the Futuresonic Lounge. What can we expect?

"A short blast of tracks from the debut album, Don't Fly Into The Sun, with a few new ones. We have a new Fender Rhodes keyboardist and some nice 606 drum machine beats..."

What do you think of the festival?

"Great, itā€™s pretty interesting all round, lots of new fresh music in a city festival which is great for Manchester and I don't like tents or mud so itā€™s alright by me. Itā€™s something different, embracing new technology, like the fact you can walk into bars and hear Beats songs on the hubs... I mean thatā€™s pretty new for a backward analogue fool like me!"

You're covering Kissā€™ I Was Made For Lovinā€™ You, what made you choose it?

"I always liked the voice of the girl singer that I heard covering it once (Paulina Rubio in 2002 ā€“ Ed), just the way she made it slow, and I was messing round in a rehearsal one day, being daft and it just worked. Itā€™s a really nice love song..."

How are your own new songs coming on?

"Pretty good. I am planning to have an album complete before I release anything though. On this new record, I have been influenced by Iggy, Kraftwerk, Madrugadaā€¦ it takes time though. The vocals take a while but I have some up-tempo interesting stuff as well slower sad things. I want some 7ā€¯ black plastic vinyl made for Autumn. Keep your eye on the MySpace site."

You describe the sound as a 'tubes not chips' approach. What do you mean?

"I strive for thatĢżwarm vintage sound, that will bite when you turn it up on your hi-fi."
Mike TV explains the Beats For Beginners sound

"Well, itā€™s that electronica warmth you get in some sounds with valves or older synths, rather than harsh noises on others. Itā€™s all about finding the right harmonics you see... okay thatā€™s as deep as I go when it comes to sound. I strive for thatĢż warm vintage sound, that will bite when you turn it up on your hi-fi."

So when will be hearing the fruits of your labours on record?

"Good question, as Iā€™m back on a mini tour in August with My Architects, so we are looking at September or October. I have a vinyl single planned for then and hopefully, Iā€™ll follow it with an EP before Christmas. Basically, once I finish the vocals, itā€™ll be however quick it takes to press 500 records in Eastern Europe and get them back again!"
