A work of fiction

Having taken it upon themselves to liven up the city’s Tuesday nights, the FictionNonFiction team are now branching out to Saturdays. We caught up with Max and Lee to ask about robot bands, burlesque shows and podcasting hidden messages.

First things first, why is the night called FictionNonFiction?

FictionNonFiction

  • Fiction Non Fiction host a new night at the Roadhouse, headlined by The Pistolas, on Sat 17 June
  • FNF is held every Tuesday at the Tiger Lounge. June 13 brings Copter and The VC's + June 20 is Black Basque and Pooler

"Everything is FictionNonFiction! Up versus down, inside out and back around. When have things really made much sense any other way? Any further definition is kinda redundant. It’s a lot of versus and the vices. Just stand on the table and take a look."

You've had some great bands on. Who's entertained you the most?

"Pretty much any of the bands we’ve had on who deliver with conviction, a belief that’s it’s a noise they’ve got to make or bands who really set out to put on a show and entertain. But let’s not talk about the past, let’s look to the future.

"We’ve got Copter on June 13th, who claim to be from outer space and here on remand. They have a human size robot in their band and it is predicted they’ll raise the entertainment stakes pretty high.

"Of course, we’re looking forward to The Pistolas on June 17th and a Parisian band called Pravda, who are coming up on July 11th. They’re weapons grade A good stuff and the video visuals suggest a live spectacular to match."

Is there anyone who's come down that you think it was a mistake to book in hindsight?

"Yo ho ho. Not especially, sometimes bands do talk the talk better than they walk the walk. The only real egg rottens are the tiny number of over-serious individuals who act like they’re Pope John Paul playing Carnegie Hall, rather than trying to have a good time in a seedy Manchester basement club.

"We run on FNF time, which is naturally loose. This seems an affront to some folks who insist on approaching things with a much more national socialist control plan. Thankfully these characters are few and far between and can often be weeded out early on in the selection process as they ask about things like bass ‘rigs’."

It's not just bands, you've had burlesque shows too. What made you book them?

"Tiger Lounge, where we live on Tuesday, has a huge picture of Betty Page above the stairs down so it seemed an appropriate venue to showcase the traditional rock ‘n’ roll combination of music and burlesque dancing. The Lady Luck troupe wanted to do a revue and were looking for somewhere to get up and do their thing, so it we were happy to oblige.

"We would like to get some more varied bits of entertainment going on. We’ve been trying to get a magician, but so far with no joy. We thought we’d got some fella called Magic John lined up, but he’s vanished.

"If there’s anybody who has some strange cabaret act or who can mess with people’s minds magic style, then please get in touch. We’ll give you wine and beer and sandwiches galore. That’s a promise you can take to the bank!"

Why have decided to do a Saturday night too?

"Why not? It seems like a good idea to us for many reasons and not only because we can take our own drinks and don’t get hassled to drink up and leave at the end of the night by enthusiastic bouncers.

"Also, although the Tuesdays are class, many people don’t always get the full benefit because of work jobs and early starts. It has been suggested by many among this number that a weekend FNF outing would suit them down to the ground and top to toe."

Will Saturdays be a different kettle of fish to Tuesdays?

"I’ve never been one to get nervous playing live, but watching those numbers counting down to zero on the CD deck while DJing can induce a small panic!"
Max on the difference between playing and DJing

"There’s a later license and more room to dance and fall about. There are probably more songs about Saturday night than Tuesday, and they’re generally of the opinion that’s Saturdays a reet good time for a bit of drink, drank, drunk and the sport of dancing and romance chancing. Seems fair enough.

"Tuesdays, on the other hand, have got a bad reputation. Of the three songs that spring to mind about Tuesdays, they’re all a touch melancholy. For us, this is not the case, it’s Wednesdays are the real pain.

"I can’t think of any songs about Wednesday but it should be written. Them Wednesday blues. Everybody’s down on Mondays, Tuesdays ain’t half bad but don’t talk to me about Wednesdays, they surely is some of the worst days I ever had."

How do you find DJing compared to being in a band?

"The level of disorganisation is certainly about the same. I’ve never been one to get nervous playing live but sometimes watching those numbers counting down to zero on the CD deck while DJing can induce a small flash of panic. Especially when you’ve forgotten to cue up something else… I think it’s more the numbers counting down though, perhaps part of the brain thinks something’s going to explode. Maybe somewhere something does."

There’s a rumour that FNF is set to launch a podcast. What’s that all about?

"Indeed we are. Its something we been meaning to get round to for a while. We thought about doing a fanzine or something, but in these days of jet packs and space food, it seemed easier knock up a full colour audio experience. The golden age of communication and all that.

"Ears will hear a mixed grill of new bands we like such as Metronomy, Xerox Teens, The Noble Snipers, and The VC’s, shot through with some slices of FictionNonFiction word sound. We’re in the last phase of development and now we’ve taken out the hidden messages, it seems to have no obvious ill effects on test subjects."
