SITCC (Rick Boardman - third from left)
Snowfight In The City Centre

Snowfighting for change

Lisa Brown is dead, long live Lisa Brown… sort of. To celebrate their expansion, the band have become Snowfight In The City Centre. Ahead of their debut single, we asked Rick Boardman about the name change, soundtracking England and playing SWAP.

Why did you change your name?

Join the Snowfight

  • Snowfight In The City Centre play the Music Box on Thurs 8 and Fri 30 June, and Big Hands for SWAP festival on Fri 14 July. Prices vary.
  • No Light Left is out on High Voltage Records on Mon 3 July, backed by My Saving Grace

"We have been developing for a number of years and been through a number of different styles trying to find our own sound. We are much happier with where we are now and we felt a name change helped define this.

"We got rid of some old songs and have written lots more material - although some songs remain. We also expanded our line-up from four to six people in order to do this. And let’s face it, Lisa Brown is a daft name for a band!"

No Light Left was used as background music for the announcement of the England squad. How did that feel?

"It was obviously something we were very proud of. It was great to see Rooney score a goal to one of our tunes! But we still haven’t received our free tickets to the world cup."

So when will we get to hear a Snowfight album?

"We feel that we now have enough songs for an album but I’m not sure when that will be out. Our debut single is out in July and there is still a long way to go until the album comes out. But it’s going to be good when it finally does."

You're due to play a set at SWAP festival. What do you think of the festival?

"Let’s face it, Lisa Brown is a daft name for a band!"
Rick Boardman on why they changed their name

"We have never played SWAP before as it seems to be more acoustic based with mostly singer-songwriters performing. But we had a good reaction to our acoustic set at the Music Box towards the end of last year so we though we might go for it.

"We rearranged the songs and used different instrumentation, which was a good challenge. It’s nice to hear the songs completely stripped down. It’s a great festival and we are really looking forward to it."

You're also playing at High Voltage and they're putting out your record. What do you think of the label?

"We love being involved with High Voltage. Rich (Cheetham) has his finger on the pulse and always finds the best new bands for his nights, and his label is starting to take off now. It’s exciting to be involved with them and we hope it can keep on evolving the way it has done so far."

It's a great time for Manchester music at the moment. How does it feel to be inside the storm, so to speak?

"It’s pretty much always a great time to be in Manchester for music. There’s a constant stream of quality acts coming out all the time. And we are, of course, very proud to be part of it. It’s great to play alongside top acts such as The KBC, The Whip and Liam Frost.

"It keeps you on your toes playing with such brilliant songwriters and musicians. The other thing that’s great is the camaraderie between bands and everyone is really supportive of each other."
