100 Club - Simon's story

Simon Morrell is from Timperley. His passion for motorsport means he has a rather interesting vehicle parked in his driveway.

Simon is a volunteer Marshall providing emergency medical assistance for motor races across the UK, including Oulton Park in Cheshire and the Three Sisters in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

But you won't find a racing car on his driveway - Simon has a twenty-two foot long ambulance!

"In there I have all the hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic cutting gear that the Fire Brigade use. We've also got all the medical side, oxygen, heart defibrillators, you name it".

Simon says that all motor racing is officiated by volunteers. "There're Marshals, which you would normally see around the race course dressed in orange and we've done an additional training which allows us to sit on what is known as a rescue unit."

"We have a very great responsibility despite the fact we are volunteers," says Simon. "We're being expected to provide a professional service to these guys. If it was me in that situation I would want the very best people looking after me and so that's what I strive to do."
