100 Club Lesley's story

In the last twelve months 37 year-old Lesley Wardle from Farnworth has raised more than seventy thousand pounds for charity.

Lesley is a full time fundraiser for the Fire Service's National Benevolent Fund, an organisation which supports firefighters and their family.

Lesley works at Farnworth Fire Station, and says that the Benevolent Fund has to raise around Β£7m a year across the whole UK.

Later this year Lesley will be fundraising in Nottingham with firefighters from New York. "As it's the anniversary of 9/11 we've actually got some of the firemen to run in the Nottingham Marathon and they'll be spending a week with the Fire Service."

Lesley says that working in the Fire Station has really opened up her eyes as to what the firefighters have to do on a day to day basis. "I know they go out on fire calls and I know they go out to road traffic accidents, but I didn't realise what they did when they were at the station.

"They train constantly and have lectures constantly and PT training."

Lesley has nothing but praise for the work they do. "I've been here for twelve months now and everything they do is based on the public. They really are unsung heroes."
