Kylie at the MEN Arena - 10/10

Chris Long (gig: 23/04/05)
Kylie shows are always a smorgasbord of costumes, dancing and camp fun, so it was no surprise to find such delights in her Showgirl show. What did come as a bit of a shock was how fantastic her vocals at the centre of a beautifully intimate set were.

It takes an artist of some stature to make the expanse of the Arena feel like a sweaty underground club, but as Ms Minogue floated over the audience, delicately seated on a crescent moon to stun the assembled with a pitch perfect Somewhere Over The Rainbow, for all the diminutive Aussie’s lack of size, it was clear she had a lot of people in her tiny palm. Where she waved, the audience followed. Where she grinned, the masses cheered.

Kylie’s power comes not from the strength of her tunes, though few could fail to have punched the air and flexed their hips to chest-pumping versions of I Believe In You, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and Spinning Around, but from her enjoyment in her own show. While others pout and preen, Kylie simply revelled in the whirlwind that danced and shone around her stage, never stopping smiling for a moment.

Her outfits were stunning, ranging from peacock feathered corsets and body stockings to space age basques and long flowing gowns, all reflected in her phenomenal dancers. They popped and pulled every move imaginable across the massive stage as gladiators, go-go dancers, majorettes, nearly-nude showering studs (she really does know her fans well) and bondage tracksuited future fighters, while the set morphed from disco to city street to the Follies Bergere.

Showgirl’s set-list was drawn from every phase of her career and that really did mean every phase. A mighty Confide In Me sat next to Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi; Put Yourself In My Place swooned alongside an exhilarating Please Stay; The Locomotion got a Rocky Horror Show sleazy shakedown, the masses played Jason for half of Especially For You, and a straight take on I Should Be So Lucky (complete with the lyrics signed out by the dancers) got the biggest cheer of the night.

As she launched into a whirling Love At First Sight to close, the big screen behind flashed clips from every video of her 17 years of pop, right back to the fresh faced Charlene she began as. Hilarious, funky and unflappably sexy, they proved two things. The first is that she has happily embraced the tunes and the looks that have got her to her position at the top. The second is that she just keeps getting better with age.

I loved every single minute of it - wow! I wish I had taken my girlfriend with me and then I wouldn't have looked so camp dancing to all her songs.

Dazza

WOW!!! Until this gig I was a Kylie virgin, (Which for somebody like me is a rarity) but from the moment the mini goddess appeared on stage I was hooked. By the end of the show I was shedding tears of joy that I could hold this memory for ever. I can now assure you that I will be giving every spare ‘Pink Pound’ to enhance my Kylie experience and would urge anybody else to do the same.

Ooh Dean you are awfult to me. Anyway the show was terrible and I repeat a dose of the Emperor's New Clothes. She is a wooden Australian soap actress, always will be, and if it wasn't for silly gays like you giving her dying career a boost she would have gone the way of her co-star who's name I cant even remember since he headlined Jumpin Jacks!!

I dont understand all the people praising kylie. Seems like kylie has a deal with everyone as no one made any negative comments.Although she shakes her bootie well but imagine J-Lo shaking the assets on the stage.Tell you what folks my local artist performs better. All those geezars that claim to have dragged to watch the show i bet they could not wait kylie move.tHE SHOW WORKED LIKE A SLEEPING PILL FOR ME.I SLEPT ALL THE WAY

Well if "Ian Cheetham, Manchester" goes to the New Union then he must be as Camp as they Come! The Show was fantastic, surely the best show Ive been to of hers (and Ive been to a few). I went to see her on Sunday and Tuesday, but was closer to the stage Tuesday and what a sight! Costumes excellent, Dancers stunning and Kylie looked flawless. As usual Kylie always gets a warm and roaring response from the Manchester people. Well done guys and gals!

Chris Long has taken a camp pill because how can a man who clearly has indie music tattooed on his forehead like this pop princess in any way that goes beyond her amazing booty? Very strange Chris but as long as your hips feel thoroughly flexed and you have pumped your chest enough for one evening, I'm sure you'll be back to your "Long live the Roses!" normal self in no time:-)

Glad to hear Ian's comments, as I too was "dragged" there by the wife. I can honestly say I haven't seen anything more enjoyable in my life, it even takes over the birth of my two children!!! I can't praise the little pocket rockett enough, what a dynamo, and where does she get the enorgy from? Next time she's in town I'll be there on the front row hopefully. Well done Kylie...

Saturday night was well worth the wait Miss minogue certainly knows how to put on a show for her many different fans, However, I think I enjoyed her previous appearance at the MEN Arena which was quite so perfect and timed down to the final detail. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had seemed almost real instead of out of this world!!

Stay away from glasto Kylie

Ian Cheetham, Elderley edge
It was a must go show, I have been a great fan of kylie and her shakes. Although i was not in a mood but by was convinced by my girlfriend to watch the show. It was money well spent.By the way I had to wear the t-shirt with kinky kylie's photo on it But the environment was so intoxicating that i forgot that i was with someone and Joined the front row kylie crazies. Cant wait to go again next year.

Ian Cheetham, Manchester
The Emperor's New Clothes I am afraid. Miss Average comes on stage, singing average songs (to be polite), in silly constumes to an audience which must have very average music tastes. When I used to go the the clubs in what is now 'The Village' I never experienced this obsession amongst my kind with posing women singers singing bad songs. What is going on? This show was like a camp villahe party and I assure that is not a compliment. If my boyfriend hadn't blackmailed me into going I would have stayed in The New Union.

Gareth Jones, Dreamland
I am speechless! If Kylie isn't voted the best female artist of all time in EVERY poll then the music buying public are deaf and blind. She is more than just a fit bum, although she is most certainly that. Dance routines to die for, with male hunks to drool over if that's your thing (its mine for sure). Costumes to dream about and when she sang 'I should be so lucky' I literally passed out at the thought of being close enough to this Dive to touch her.

Dance, dance, dance, that's all I did all the way through, my feet were so sore afterwards. Kylie is my idol and she never let us all down, what a fabulous night. I have never been to the village with such a spring in my step afterwards. And as for the tour t-shirt my friends Ian, Mark and Qasim offered me a small fortune for it!! Jealousy gets you nowhere boys. 10 OUT OF 10 FOR ME
