Musician of the Year: Morrissey

The Mancunian Musician of 2004

To explain, this is a special award to the Mancunian artist to have the biggest impact on local, national and international music in 2004. There are no nominees as this is a special award.

and the winner is...

Morrissey

Truly, who else could it have been? Having been away for seven years, he returned with a set of corking tunes, his old smug genius and cutting looks, and showed the bands he inspired how to do it all with style. Whether in the limits of Manchester at the Arena or Move, or stealing the show at Leeds with an opening rendition of How Soon Is Now?, he returned to his place at the top of the tree.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ GMR's Conrad Murray adds his own tribute...

"Steven Patrick Morrissey is undoubtedly the Mancunian Musician of the Year. There's no real competition. The bequiffed tunesmith from Stretford has returned with his best work since Vauxhall and I reached No.1 a decade ago.

Moz has not only given us the album of the year with You Are The Quarry, he's also knocked out the best two singles of the last 12 months with First Of The Gang To Die and Irish Blood, English Heart. Both his live appearances in his former hometown, the Arena and, in particular, his triumphant appearance at Move proved that there really is no one quite like Mozzer.

Word on the street, or at least whispers outside Salford Lad's Club, have suggested that this might be Moz's last ever album as he 'never wanted to turn into an ageing rocker'. He might be ageing but he's amazing - long may the king of Manchester music reign."
