Best of 2004

Newcomer of the Year: Hilton
Newcomer of the Year: Hilton

The Best Mancunian Newcomer of 2004

To explain, this is the vote for the best Mancunian artist or band containing one or more Mancunians to break through in 2004.

and the winner, as voted for users of this site, is...

Hilton (47%)

Hilton

What we said...
"Not Afraid To Be Happy is, in equal parts, tender, emotional, gentle, dark, brooding, scary, epic and claustrophobic. It aims high in its songwriting and its realisation and falls just short of its ambition." Chris Long on Hilton's Not Afraid To Be Happy (30/09/04)

also nominated...

Nine Black Alps (20%)

Nine Black Alps

What we said...
"Next were a band who have received many accolades lately in the Manchester scene, Nine Black Alps. Power and youthful energy is their specialty dished up with fiery Americanised vocals and frantic, choppy power chords." Chris Nield on NIne Black Alps at Night and Day (02/05/04)

Beats For Beginners (16%)

Beats For Beginners

What we said...
"The potential of Kill All DJs gave a glimpse of just what Beats For Beginners might produce on a debut album. The reality is even better than could have been hoped. Don't Fly Into The Sun is one small step away from being a pop classic. The search for the best debut out of Manchester this year is officially over." Chris Long on Beats For Beginners' album, Don't Fly Into The Sun (26/07/04)

Dear Eskiimo (14%)

Dear Eskiimo

What we said...
"Dear Eskiimo are in a different class altogether. Recently signed to Mercury, this short but sweet set was their celebration before getting started on an album. If the tunes they’re already playing are anything to go by, particularly the dark twists of Patience and the manic energy of Don’t Wanna Feel, it could be one of the biggest of next year." Chris Long on Dear Eskiimo at Tmesis (24/11/04)

The Earlies (3%)

The Earlies

What we said...
"...if you like your bands predictable and pigeonholed, run a mile from the Earlies, because with these guys, all you can to is fasten your seatbelts, prepare for the unexpected and cling on for the ride." Zannah Ingraham on The Earlies at Academy 3 (21/10/04)

Hilton - soon to be one of the big players in the northern musical arena.

Jennie
Hilton gets my vote. Great tunes, even better when heard live!

Jo Jackson
Hilton is so refreshing it slides down like a summer cool drink

David Richards
Hilton gets my vote. The upbeat melodies and depressingly honest lyrics take me through my daily mood swings.

Charlie Blackwell
Nine Black Alps - These guys really are fantastic. Love the record and the live show and can't wait till the Night & Day gig to see how they've come on since recording the album.

Tobi Jug
Has to be The Earlies fabulous live set at Academy 3 although 9BA will naturally have a successful 2005 and create Nu-Madchester

Rob
There's no doubt that the Nine Black Alps are going to put Manchester back on the map musically next year. Stunning catchy songs, raw grungy guitars, all not a hint of arrogance amoungst them. I'm prepared to put money on them having a top ten album next year.

Anna
I like the Nine Black Alps, The Vox, The Longcut, Fretwell, Beats For Beginners and Fear of music.

Karen Burns
Hilton are full of Northern Soul - coming from a Southerner.....

Doug Walker
Hilton for sure - great live and real feel to their album - even for an old 'un !

Dave
Nine Black Alps - NO CONTEST. These guys are the business and this time next year we'll all have their album on the top of our cd pile at home.

Phil (Hilton)

HUGH TODD
Hilton without a doubt are the standout act. Fantastic lyrics delivered with catchy melodies and brilliant live performances. Look out Badly Drawn Boy, they're after your tea cosy

Ami
Maybe it's not allowed to vote from Sweden but my choice for The Best Mancurian Newcomer of 2004 is Hilton, of course, with Not Afraid to Be Happy! Best tracks: Killing a girl (the first I found on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ site and played again and again, I love it), the sublime Perfect Day - so beautiful with strings, the soft Silver Ladder, the powerful Sense of Innocence, the stunning Rapeseed. Outstanding music and with sometimes emotional, poetic and painting lyrics.

Mark Williams
Hilton- is a really good album and also they sponsor our charity events with their equipment Big Thanks

paul heaton
