2012 Soapbox: Newham

Meet three Newham residents who are having their say on the role of Newham in the 2012 Olympic Games. Hear what they have to say and join in the discussion with your own views...

ARFAH FAROOQ

Seventeen year old Arfah has lived in East Ham all her life. She's looking forward to the Games coming in 2012, and say's the Olympic Park that's being built on her doorstep, will be "amazing."

She predicts the Aquatics building will be "architecturally brilliant" but it's the urban park that Arfah feels will add the most value to Newham.

For the Farooq family, there is concern the arrival of developers could see the ordinary people of the borough "being kicked out."

GRAEME BRIGHT

There will be five new sporting facilities left in Newham once the Olympic and Paralympic Games come to a close.

But, for those working in the Arts - the opportunity of 2012 doesn't stop at the running track.

Graeme Bright from the Theatre Royal, Stratford says 2012 will give the town the "attention it's needed for a long time - and will leave the place looking and feeling a lot different."

GUETAN ELITO

Another aspiring artist, singer Guetan, says he is less optimistic about the opportunities thrown up by the arrival of the Games in 2012.

He says for many younger people there is a feeling that the "Olympics won't do anything for them... particularly in terms of jobs."

For Guetan and his friends there is a feeling the Olympic jobs will go to those "already trained."

However, it's predicted that Newham alone will benefit from the creation of 12,000 new jobs when the Olympics come to town.
