Exhibition honours Caribbean elders' contribution

Black History Month comes to Hackney with many events planned. Hackney Museum marks the docking of the SS Empire Windrush at Tilbury 60 years ago, as a landmark in British history

An exhibition of living conditions and memories from Caribbean people who settled in London from 1948, is on display at the Hackney Museum.

"Caribbean elders from Hackney played an important part in this great social and cultural change, so it's important...to acknowledge this."

Lorna Holder, Writer and Producer

A Generation

Fondly known as the Windrush generation, this wave of new immigrants sailed from British colonies including Jamaica and Trinidad on the SS Empire Windrush arriving in Tilbury docks on 22 June 1948.

Set in 1962, the exhibition will show the interior of a Victorian terraced-house in Hackney owned by a Jamaican couple who rented out most of the rooms to other Caribbean immigrants.

Workshops

Earlier this year some of Hackney's Caribbean elders from islands including Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia, Dominica and Trinidad, participated in workshops.Μύ

Their recollections and memories, postive and negative, will form part of the exhibition, which covers all aspects of life for the first generation of Caribbean migrant workers.

60 Years

The exhibition commemorating 60 years since the Empire Windrush arrival, will also include screenings of the documentary Living Under One Roof in Hackney.

Lorna Holder, writer and producer, said:Μύ "We must remember that the 60s was a period that shaped and defined Britain as we know it today.
