Plan for Tottenham city farm is underway after Haringey muck in

The Council's plan for a new city farm in Lordship recreation ground is gathering pace after they give cash to the regeneration project which is in great need of a funding boost

Plans to transform Lordship Recreation Ground into one of the most popular parks in London is underway.

"The scheme would also help us in our drive to make young people more aware of the importance of looking after the environment ."

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture & Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu

Haringey Council want to create a new city farm in Tottenham and have agreed to pursue a major parks regeneration project.

Lottery bid

The council will be investing Β£311,000 together with a Lottery grant of Β£235,000.Μύ The monies will be put towards a second bid to the Lottery that they hope will result in a Β£6.274 million overhaul for Lordship Rec.

But before this the council will need to raise a further Β£2 million from a range of external funding sources before making a second bid for Parks for People funding from the National Lottery.

Regeneration

The regeneration scheme will include:

~ A new city farm and environmental centre.
~ Restoring Shell Theatre & Model Traffic Area to teach road safety.
~ Uncovering the currently culverted River Moselle in the park.
~ Landscape works, including new pathways and tree planting.

The scheme would also create:

~ A new facility for cycle proficiency training.
~ More training & volunteering opportunities for local residents.
~ Better education for young people on environmental issues.
~ A food production co-operative.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said "We believe these proposals would breathe new life into the park and reassert its position at the heart of the Tottenham community.

"The scheme would also help us in our drive to make young people more aware of the importance of looking after the environment".

Location

The location of the proposed city farm at Lordship Recreation Ground, is near the site of the original Broadwater Farm, after which the housing estate was named.

If the council are successful with their various funding bids improvement work at Lordship Rec would begin in 2011.
