The Bernie Grant Arts Centre, opened to recognise and continue the community work of one of Britain's first black MPs, is facing financial difficulties.  The Bernie Grant Art Centre in Tottenham Just eight months after opening, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham, which is led by chief executive, Doreen Foster, has had to cut up to 50% of it staff. The purpose-built Β£15 million arts centre which opened in September last year, with a brief to develop the next generation of black and culturally diverse theatre practitioners has had to part company with 7 of their 15 staff due to cuts in Art Council funding.
The loss of the Β£100k grant also means that the centre named after the popular Tottenham MP who died 8 years ago this month at the age of 56, will be unable to fulfil one of its main aims of producing performances, and will instead focus on hiring out their premises and presenting accredited courses. Good newsThe arts centre which features a 300-seat theatre, rehearsal rooms and extensive training facilities was nominated by the Arts Council for a Southbank award, in recognition of its culturally diverse programme.
