alTURNERtive prize winner John Long

Alternative Turner Prize

By Ayshea Buksh
Inspired by the controversial arts award, students at a school in Bexley created their own Turner prize competition.

Pupils from Welling School aged between 14 – 18Ìýheld their own modern art competition- the alTURNERtive Prize. The students battled it out on canvass, film and plasticine and the winner was John Long for his paintings.

The Berwick Road Gallery

According to organisers, recent years have seen a profusion of video and photography. But for the first time since the founding of the award five years ago,Ìý there were a number of students working primarily with paint.

Twelve students were short listed for the prize including: Christ Croft, Rajinder Dhillon, Deena Dosanjh, George Dunsford, Billy Granger, Mark Harrison, Holly Jennings, John Long, Rachel Robertson, Nicola Russell, Si Pui Tuong and Anthony Williams.

All the students displayed their artistic offerings at the Berwick Road Gallery- the schools very own on site gallery.

The prize was awarded byÌýLucy Davis, Director of the 198 Gallery. The 198 Gallery was established in 1988 after the Brixton riots to support the work of black artists by meeting their needs for exhibition space.

Thanks to Rachael Stanway, Welling School Arts Development Officer for the photos!
