Rugby union at Headingley

Part of the union

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds has obtained full commentary rights for all Leeds Carnegie games in rugby union's Guiness Premiership for the 2009/10 season.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds aims once again to provide the best possible coverage of Leeds Carnegie. Last season the station followed their National League One title-winning campaign up and down the country and are set to further increase their coverage for the 2009-10 season.

Broadcasting on 774 AM, DAB digital radio and also online (via www.bbc.co.uk/leeds or the main Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sport website), there'll be full match commentary of every single Leeds Carnegie game in the Guinness Premiership and Anglo-Welsh Cup, plus home European Challenge Cup games.

Gareth Jones

Gareth Jones

This season will see a full and comprehensive service for the fans with an hour's pre-match build-up to games, which will include all the latest news and interviews from coaches Andy Key and Neil Back and the players, plus features on club events and discussions on all the rugby news from around Yorkshire and the world.

As well as match-day coverage, fans will be updated on all the latest news from on the regular daily sports bulletins on all frequencies of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds as well as the website (in conjunction with the club's official site).Gareth Jones and Paul Hegarty will be the men following Leeds around the UK along with expert summariser John Liley.

Gareth was brought up watching and playing rugby every weekend in Leicester, before, like Andy Key and Neil Back, deciding Leeds was the place to be, back in 2000. A keen rugby player, Gareth's time in Yorkshire has seen him represent both Leeds Carnegie academy and Yorkshire Under-20's, but he spent most of his time playing flanker for Horsforth-based club, Yarnbury. He has been with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds since 2004, working on football, cricket and rugby league, before finally gaining the role he really wanted - covering Leeds Carnegie, last season.

Paul Hegarty

Paul Hegarty

Paul is a self-confessed rugby nut having played in Wales for over 25 years.ΜύHe started as a prop then as a flanker for Cwmbran and Croesyceiliog before moving north. Paul started reporting rugby for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds in 1996.ΜύPaul counts himself lucky to have commentated on Leeds' cup final victory at Twickenham and hopes that it won't be long before those sort of occasions come round again.

Paul Hegarty will be providing regular updates on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds (103.9 FM) on Saturday 22 August 2009 from Leeds Carnegie's final pre-season game at the Ospreys from 2.30pm.
