Under Leeds' spell

Owen Carey Jones is a filmaker who loves to shoot movies in his home city. His latest film, The Spell, is shot entirely on location in Leeds.

Leeds was the location

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Leeds website spoke with Owen while he was in Cannes to publicise the film to festival goers. it has been screened twice at the film festival.

"I like to shoot in Leeds" admits Owen, "It's nice to sleep in your own bed. It's
easier to be on location in Leeds.

"We have a crew of about 20 people and we usually have no problem using Leeds as a backdrop. We do have to liaise with Leeds City Council and the police.

"There would be a problem if people on the street were to stare into the camera but people behave very well. I would recommend Leeds.

"The film was shot with a 'tiddly' budget of Β£160,000. We call in locations like friends' houses for free and we get through filming by being extremely economical."

The film has been seen at Cannes by a mixture of distributors, producers and festival goers. Distribution is still been discussed for several countries including Australia and Canada. However Owen can confirm that the 84-minute thriller will get a UK theatrical release in Vue cinemas including Leeds later in 2009.

Based on a what is aid to be a true story, The Spell follows Jenny, a young girl who finds herself unwanted by her separated parents during the formative years of her life and leaves home. Her boyfriend Rick's associations with witchcraft and black magic take her down a path that leads to the most horrific experience of her life.
