Isolated and abused

Two members of Leeds' Chinese community want to show that just because the Chinese slip under the radar sometimes, they are also subject to racial abuse and harassment.

"We are Kit Yee (29 years old) and Kit Ying (20 years old). Our parents moved to the UK in the 1970s. We have lived in Leeds with our parents for over a quarter of a century. We have suffered racism and anti-social behaviour from youths and sometimes their families get involved. From our point of view we think the adults are always trying to turn things around and blame us rather than finding out what actually happened."

"We have suffered racism for the past ten years and with me (Kit Ying) being the youngest one at 20 years old, I had to grow up with it as a matter of course. In a way, I suppose it means that I matured quickly because of my experiences. Where we live now has changed dramatically. Ten years ago, it was a much nicer street to live in.Μύ Nowadays the street has gone downhill, from our point of view, with a lot of the houses either private rented or used for temporary housing."

"As a family, my mum (Oi Wan) and I (Kit Yee) have individually had things thrown at us like eggshells, pebbles, plastic bottles and stones from the top window of neighbouring houses. Also a variety of rubbish gets thrown into our backyard, like bits of toast, meat joints, cans, whole eggs - really anything they could find to throw."

"Last year, we had our living room window smashed, on the coldest night of the year. It came out of blue and left us in a state of shock. We had also stones thrown and footballs kicked directly at the kitchen window, leaving it cracked and dented."

"Our dad is hardly at home due to work and only comes home once a week. He cannot relax at home on his day off and has to deal with these youths whenever they are causing trouble. As a family and as individuals we have suffered in different ways - emotionally and physically - and it stresses us out!"

"We have appeared on Look North and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds talking about this subject but we didn't do this for publicity. We did it to make a point and to make people aware that racism is happening in this day and age. We didn't intend to get anything out of it, this was about raising 'RACIAL AWARENESS'!!!"
