Swapping pints for plimsolls?

A local volunteering project wants student fans of the Otley Run to forgo the booze and do another type of run.

Volunteers from the Agents4Change campaign will be taking a sober approach to Leeds' most famous pub crawl, to help promote drink awareness. They will be swapping pint glasses for running shoes to take part in the 'Otley Fun Run' in Hyde Park on Sunday 9 March 2008 from 12pm.

Cheerleaders from the Emma Coombs Dance Academy who also dance for the Batley Bulldogs will be supporting the Otley Fun Run in full cheer. The squad will be on site to motivate all runners by performing their stunts before and after the race. Emma Coombs explains: "We have chosen to support the Otley Fun run as we believe it is important that students are aware of how serious binge drinking can be, anything we can do to help promote a safer student lifestyle is worth it."

Agents4Change is a project coordinated by volunteering charity CSV with support from outside agencies and youth volunteering charity 'v'. It aims to empower people aged between 16 and 25 to take action in their communities.

Louise Rigg, Agents4Change volunteer says: "The Otley Run bar crawl in Leeds continues to be an ever popular part of today's student lifestyle and binge drinking culture. By running in the 'Otley Fun Run', young volunteers will be promoting the idea of safe and responsible drinking as well as helping families in crisis due to addiction.

Everyone who has enjoyed the Otley Run is invited to try the Otley FUN Run, it is only 800 metres long so anyone can join in and show their support. And everyone who takes part will also receive a student survival pack provided by our sponsors."

All runners are being asked to donate the price of a pint or be sponsored to participate in the run and the proceeds will go to the charity, Addiction Dependency Solutions (ADS), helping local people fight addiction. The race will involve a short 'School sports day' course in the north field of Hyde Park where students will be asked to hop, skip, jump and jog to complete the run.

To register and sign up for the Otley Fun Run, forms are available at participating pubs on The Otley Run or email for more information:
