Rewind: music

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Look North is taking a look back through some of its archive material and included in that material is footage of some of the nation's favourite pop stars.

It's a question that many pop fans ask all the time - just how much footage of their favourite pop acts is gathering dust in dark and gloomy vaults, never to be revealed to the public.

Madonna

Madonna at Roundhay Park in 1987

Well, now Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Look North is bucking that trend by having a dig into its extensive archives and showing some much-sought-after footage of major rock and pop acts like Madonna and the Rolling Stones in the first installment of its new Rewind feature which is broadcast over four weeks within the normal Look North programme.

While the future editions of Rewind will feature archive footage concentrating on fashion, transport and science & technology; it's the first edition (going out at 6.30pm on Thursday 19 May 2005) that will interest music fans.

The footage to be shown includes:
* Pictures and an interview with Mick Jagger when the Stones played Leeds University in 1971.
* An interview with Paul McCartney when Wings played in Sheffield in 1973
* An interview with Bing Crosby following a grouse shooting session in North Yorkshire in 1976 - one year before he died.
* A feature on trouser-splitting legend PJ Proby, who moved to the Colne Valley in 1976
* Live footage of Bruce Springsteen at Bramall Lane, Sheffield in 1988
* Live footage of Madonna at Rounday Park, Leeds in 1987.

Missed the programme? Check out the footage by clicking on the link at the top of the page.

Otis Reading with Booker T and the MG's, and The Marquees at The Queens Hall 1967 the place was heaving. Joe Cocker at Mark Altman's Ballroom on Great George Street in 1966 great gig, blew everyone away. Carl Perkins, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Them (Gloria), Memphis Slim, John Lee Hooker, Little Walter and lots of others all at the Three Coins on Mill Hill in the early sixties. No booze in the club but Yate's Wine Lodge just around the corner, happy days.

Mark Young
The great cult-rock band, Rush. They appeared at The Queens Hall in 1980. I was too young to go but my mates' older brothers were talking about the experience for weeks after. This is how I learnt what the word "incredible" meant.

Mrs Michelle Wilder
I saw the Beatles at the Odeon Leeds in 1964, I was 14 at the time, but I have never forgotten it. The tickets were like gold and my friend and I were very lucky to get them. We couldnt hear a thing we all just screamed

Don Tate
Ramones Leeds Uni Jan 26 1980. Ably supported by The Boys. What a fantastic night of punk! I must have lost two stone through sweat. Mention also to Roger McGuinn at Leeds Varieties a couple of years ago. A masterful solo performance so good you would have thought he had the rest of The Byrds with him.

Dave
I was at the Radiohead gig at the T&C - 01/11/1995 for the Bends tour, and it is in my top 10 gigs. They were absolutly awsome that night, playing the entire Bends album along with some old classics ! I had some brilliant nights at the T&C and was gutted when it shut so Leeds could have yet another trendy wine bar.
